The fifth wheel Market Right Now
A trailer that couples to a hitch in the bed of a pickup. More living space and a more residential layout than a bumper-pull of the same length.
A smaller buyer pool, but a serious one. Anyone shopping a fifth wheel already owns a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck. Fewer tire-kickers, longer time on market, better prices on well-optioned rigs.

How fifth wheels hold value
Depreciation drives what your fifth wheel is worth today, and it is front-loaded. A fifth wheel loses about 20% of its value in the first year alone, then slows to roughly 11% a year after that.
For a seller, that means the gap between what you owe and what it is worth is widest in years two through four. If you bought new in the 2021 or 2022 boom, that is probably where you are now.
Typical value retention by age
| Age | Retained | On a $40,000 RV |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 81% | $32,250 |
| 3 years | 64% | $25,500 |
| 5 years | 51% | $20,250 |
| 7 years | 40% | $16,000 |
| 10 years | 28% | $11,250 |

What Sells a fifth wheel
Buyers in this category care about specific things. Get them right and it moves. Get them wrong and it sits.
- 1
Pin weight decides whether a buyer's truck can legally tow it. Serious shoppers ask first. Answer it in the listing and you screen out the wrong ones for free.
- 2
Full-time features carry real premiums here: residential fridge, washer/dryer prep, dual pane windows, four-season insulation. A lot of these buyers plan to live in it.
- 3
Auto-leveling sells the trailer when it works and kills the deal when it doesn't. Fix it before you list.

Value & selling guideFour Ways to Sell Your RV
Consignment isn’t right for everyone. Here is when it is, and when it isn’t.
| Option | Typical price | Speed | Your effort | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant cash offer | Lowest | Days | None | You need it gone this week and will trade money for speed. |
| Dealer trade-in | Low | Days | None | You're buying another RV and your state gives a sales-tax credit on the difference. |
| Consignment | Near private-party | Weeks to months | Low | You want close to what it's worth without running the sale yourself. |
| Private party sale | Highest potential | Weeks to months | High | You have the time, the patience, and somewhere safe to show it. |
Commission rates, fees, and terms vary by dealer and by state. Confirm the specific terms in writing before signing any consignment agreement. Trade-in sales-tax treatment varies by state and is not tax advice.
Selling a fifth wheel: common questions
- How much is my fifth wheel worth?
- It depends on year, condition, mileage, floorplan, options, and what similar RVs are selling for now. As a class, fifth wheels lose about 20% of their value in the first year and hold roughly 51% at five years. Those are class averages. The only way to know where yours lands is to have someone check it against recent sales.
- What does it cost to consign a fifth wheel?
- Nothing up front. No listing fee, no monthly fee. The dealer takes a commission from the sale price when it sells. Terms vary by dealer and are spelled out in the agreement before you sign.
- How long does it take to sell a fifth wheel?
- A smaller buyer pool, but a serious one. Anyone shopping a fifth wheel already owns a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck. Fewer tire-kickers, longer time on market, better prices on well-optioned rigs. Price is by far the biggest factor in how long it takes. We cannot guarantee a sale or a timeline.
- Can I consign a fifth wheel that still has a loan on it?
- Yes. Your lender holds the title until the loan is paid. On a consignment sale the payoff comes out of the proceeds, the lender releases the title, and any equity left over is yours. If you owe more than it sells for, the difference has to be covered at closing. We will walk through where you stand before anything gets listed.
